Transform Your Smile Naturally: Discover the Synergy of Dental Implants and Biologic Dentistry
Dental implants are a great fit with biologic dentistry practitioners like us. They are the only type of tooth replacement that accounts for a vital supportive structure: the tooth root. The implant is designed to function like a natural tooth root and connects to the prosthetic teeth to provide added strength. Unlike conventional bridges and other forms of tooth replacement, where only the prosthetic tooth is present, the implant reproduces the function of the root as well. Many benefits are associated with this unique design that replicates the structure of a natural tooth. Owens Dental Berthoud is excited to introduce our friends from Northern Colorado and beyond to this unique restorative treatment and our distinct holistic approaches.
What do you mean by the implant functioning like a tooth root?
Yes, the roots hold your natural teeth in place. Implants do the same thing, only for your new or prosthetic teeth. They are small, cylindrical-shaped appliances made from biocompatible materials, which means those materials are designed to promote healthy bone growth and integrate with the surrounding tissues naturally. The implant is precisely positioned where the natural roots used to be. The bone and the implant join together to provide a solid base for the replacement porcelain tooth/crown. Once attached, the implant supports the crown like a natural root supports a tooth.
What if I’m missing more than one tooth?
No problem! We can see if placing additional implants to support or retain additional teeth would be a good solution for you. These implants may connect to bridges or dentures. Due to advanced techniques, we can minimize the number of implants required to replace several or all the teeth in the upper or lower dental arch.
How do they compare to bridges for tooth replacement?
Bridges generally require the modification of two teeth on either side of the gap or space where a tooth used to be. These teeth are then used to anchor the bridge. So, your prosthetic tooth depends on these neighboring teeth for its support. If the bridge fails, it can mean the loss of two additional teeth in severe cases. Also, since otherwise healthy tooth structure is modified to accommodate the bridge, this is not always the most conservative or tissue-preserving alternative. Plus, you must take special care to clean the tight space underneath the bridge properly. Otherwise, your teeth may be vulnerable to decay. These complications can be avoided with dental implant-supported crowns and bridges.
And how do implants compare to conventional dentures?
Traditional dentures are held in place by natural suction in the mouth and the use of special denture adhesives. Over time, the loss of teeth leads to the loss or shrinkage of bone in the jaw. When this occurs, your denture will no longer fit properly, as the underlying tissues have changed. It can no longer conform well to these shrinking tissues. Your appliance may shift around, cause sores and discomfort, and interfere with proper speech and chewing function. Since implant dentures are attached to implants that are secured in the jawbone, they are not going anywhere! The correct fit is maintained, as implants help preserve the jawbone’s strength. The risk of tissue shrinking is greatly minimized and promotes healthy bone stimulation. The appliance continues to fit well, support good chewing function, and offer an attractive appearance.

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
