At Owens Dental Berthoud, our approach to dentistry is anything but conventional—and that’s by design. We believe your dental care should be as unique as you are and should support not just your oral health but your entire body’s well-being. That’s why we practice biocompatible dentistry, an essential element of biologic care that puts your safety, comfort, and long-term health first.
If you’ve been searching for a dental practice that offers a more thoughtful, conservative, and personalized experience, you’re in the right place. Here are four important facts to help you understand how biocompatible dentistry plays a central role in what we do—and how it can make a meaningful difference in your life.
At its core, biocompatible dentistry means using materials and techniques that are as harmonious with your body as possible. These are least-toxic or less-toxic options that work with your biology, not against it.
Unlike traditional dental practices that may use materials like mercury-based amalgam or aggressive procedures that remove healthy tissue, our focus is always on conservation and biocompatibility. That means:
Whether you need a filling, crown, or restoration, we aim to choose materials that look great, last long, and most importantly, support your body’s overall health.
When we say “biocompatible,” we’re not just referring to what we don’t use—we’re talking about an entire philosophy that guides how we treat you.
At Owens Dental Berthoud, our services include a wide range of less-toxic and biologically supportive options, including:
We also use diagnostics—such as blood testing or functional assessments—to better understand how oral health connects to total wellness. Every recommendation we make is tailored to your unique needs and long-term goals.
You may already know that traditional “silver” fillings are primarily made from mercury, a heavy metal that raises concerns for many patients. That’s why our office is proudly mercury-free—we never place amalgam fillings.
But we don’t stop there, we are also a mercury-SAFE office. We also follow the SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique), developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), to ensure that if you need old fillings removed, it’s done safely.
SMART protects both you and our team from harmful mercury exposure by using:
When we restore your teeth, we use metal-free, tooth-colored materials that blend in beautifully and function and feel like your natural teeth.
While concerns about mercury fillings may get the most attention, biocompatibility is something we consider for every procedure. That includes the crowns we use to restore damaged teeth, the sealants we apply to protect them, the materials we use for implants, and even the numbing and bonding agents we select.
One of our most important services is biocompatibility testing, performed through an independent lab. This allows us to understand how your body may react to different materials—and helps us avoid anything that could cause inflammation, sensitivity, or an allergic reaction.
From there, we can confidently build a treatment plan that’s not only effective but also aligned with your overall health goals—whether you’re navigating autoimmune concerns, managing chronic illness, or simply striving for the best long-term care possible.
At Owens Dental Berthoud, we believe dentistry should support your whole-body wellness, not compromise it. Our team is here to help you make informed choices, feel confident in your care, and enjoy a dental experience centered on safety, prevention, and collaboration.
